E-Commerce design is something of a mystery to most people, you can do as much research as you want, read books, articles and everything in between and still not find out exactly what sets a good e-commerce design apart from bad e-commerce design. Its really all perception, certain people like certain styles. Thats a given, but I think there is a universal given for the e-commerce industry. Keep it clean and keep it simple. I wish everyone obeyed this, but if they didn't I would not be writing this... So I can't rid the internet of what I consider bad e-commerce design, I can try to keep others from making mistakes that will lead them down a path bound for ugly ecommerce. Template designer suck at ecommerce design. I don't want to be mean, but thats just the fact. When I browse template sites in the ecommerce section I always cringe. These people just don't know how to design for ecommerce. Fact. Why does everything have to have a bevel or a sheen? Why do you always make designers where the left horizontal bar goes straight up through the header all the way to the top of the page? This is so old and played out! Stop it!!!!! The worst part about template designers is that they have no creativity. Everything they produce looks like a template because thats all they can do. You can see what I mean by visiting a lower end web host (reseller) they pretty much all use these terrible hosting templates consisting of a bad flash header and some flashing servers in the the background. To me this is a quick give away that A. These people have bad tastes. And B. They don't care enough about their brand to really spend the time and money to make sure it is well represented online.....or there is always the C. They no thing about the web and they think the site looks good. No matter which it is, it all means the same to me. Don't do business with this company. Too harsh? Maybe but thats how I pick and choose who I do busines with. To me its no different that not giving my credit card to the shady guy selling bottled water on the street. So I've spent enough time ranting...I need to be constructive now. Template designers (you know who you are) when designing template for industries you're not familiar with...take the time. Do a little reseach. It will not only make you look much more professional but I garuntee that it will also help sell templates. A lot of people know whats good and what sucks. If you make sure your template falls into the first group you're sure to sell more units and also deliver a better product. Quote this article on your site
1. 01-04-2009 20:42 Can I get an Amen? As part of my job I get to re-design a few e-commerce stores and a lot of the times the client comes to us with a template they've either grown out of or just broke because it was badly designed. One important point you touched on was that you picked who you trusted with your credit card info based on the look of their site. I think a lot of online users do the same thing and educating e-retailers to that fact is key to convincing them to spend time and money on that component. Thus ridding the interwebs of bad design... ...which is the ultimate goal. Something on your mind? |
