Kmart.com Re-Design PDF Print E-mail

Just a few days ago K-Mart launched a re-designed of their website Kmart.com.  Blogs and Tweets soon lit up with comments like 'how did this make it through QA" and "what are they thinking?"

Since the re-design of kmart.com has been so ill received I figured it would be worth it to do a quick review to talk about the pros and cons of the design as I see them.

The first thing you notice when you visit the site is the left navigation.  Its meant to dominate the UI and be the starting point to begin shopping on the site.  It accomplishes this simply because its contrast with the rest of the UI.  Bright red and right there in your face.  In this case they have made their left navigation panel their header.  Once you get a level down the navigation tones down and bit and is used pretty well to present the guided navigation links.  Design is perception, and while the left nav may not be my style, I still think it does a nice job of giving the customer a static point to navigate the site.

Longest search bar ever?  The new kmart.com may just get that away.  The liquid layout of the site stretches clear across your browser, search bar and all.  In my case I'm looking at a search bar over 1000px wide.....wow.  The sad thing is, the action button for the search just isn't bold enough, so even with a 1k pixel search bar, its not really noticeable.

So what were they thinking?  Well my first thought is "Amazon".  It seems to me that the designers for Kmart.com were looking to re-create the look and feel of the internet largest retailer Amazon.com.  How did they do?  We'll I don't think either sites are very attractive, but if in fact Kmart.com was meant to look similar to Amazon I think they've done a decent job.  That doesn't make it good, but all that really matters is how much the customers like the new design and that remains to be seen.

I'd love to hear your opinions on the Kmart.com re-design.  Comment please.
